Why do Muslims celebrate Eid? Eid ul-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice,” commemorated by Muslims across the world is a major Islamic holiday celebrating Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, out of obedience to God. The prophet was ready but a miracle happened and in place of his son a goat appeared and the Prophet slaughtered the goat instead. Muslims believe, God was testing the Prophet’s love for him.

Celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, it is the month signifying signifies devotion, faith, charity, and submission to God’s will. It is also the month Hajj pilgrimage is performed and a holy time that encourages believers to reflect on their own obedience to God and affection towards each other.
